Carrie Nelson

Carrie Nelson

I’m Carrie. You might know me as the two-legged part of Miss Rosie’s Quilt Co., or as that chatty girl who writes the blogs for Moda Fabrics. Mostly I’m “just Carrie”. I like to play with fabric and make quilts, pillows, bags and whatever else I can think of, and while I write patterns, I’m not very good at following them. I like doing it differently, adding some little twist. Not because my way is better but because the things I make are my story – a patchwork of experiences, ideas, skills and experiments.

Pincushion Pals
Saturday, June 15, 8:00 – 12:00 noon
Pincushions – or pinnies – are rather like potato chips. It’s hard to stop with just one. Using scraps or pre-cuts, just cut, sew, quilt, turn and stuff. By themselves or filling a basket, they can be used or simply enjoyed. The class will include one design, and then tips on quilting, turning, stuffing and finishing. And you’ll go home with a finished pinnie!

Supply List:
Finished size varies from 3” x 6” to 2 ¾” x 8 ½”.
Fabric Requirements:
At least a dozen strips that are at least 4” long – the widths can vary
• If the strips are very narrow – less than 1” wide – you’ll need more of them
• And if you’re not sure what to bring, a charm pack will do – 42 squares 5” x 5”.
4” x 10” strip for borders – optional
5” x 10” piece of fabric for backing
10” x 10” square of relatively flat, light-to-medium weight batting – cotton or cotton/blend
• Quilter’s Dream Request or Select, Hobbs Tuscany Cotton or Hobbs Heirloom 80/20
Pin Pals book required.

Tools:
Neutral sewing thread – for block assembly
Coordinating thread for machine quilting – 50 wt. or 80 wt.
• For most of my pinnies, I use neutral colors for the quilting
Basic Sewing supplies
Rotary cutter & mat – small mat is recommended, it’s just easier
Rotary Ruler – 4 ½” x 4 ½” or 6” x 6” and 6” x 12” recommended
Seam ripper – you won’t need it but it probably needs to be dusted anyway
A sense of humor – your instructor is a little loopy
